Where did summer go?
Where did the summer go? It seems as though it just got started and quick as a flash it’s over. The leaves are turning and if the sudden drop in temperature is any indication, we are heading into autumn. If you’ve read my newsletters the past few years, you know October is the month I feature Pinot Noir. My love affair with Pinot Noir, more specifically, Burgundy dates back more than 20 years. A friend of mine worked in a small French restaurant in San Francisco, was captivated by French wines, I tasted an Echezeaux that year with her. To my untrained but curious palate it was an epiphany of delicate fruit, minerality and haunting floral elements. Alas, maybe it was my naïve palate or just the circumstance, but I’ve never tasted a wine quite like that one. I think of that wine every time I taste Burgundy, hoping to recreate that experience. Perhaps that’s part of Burgundy’s allure…you will taste many in your lifetime, but only a handful will be memorable. So being the wine geek that I am, I keep tasting, trying to find a wine that tops that Echezeaux. Who knows, maybe one of these wines will have that effect on you.
