Spring’s Greatest Hits
Wild geranium and bloodroot have made an appearance on my property. The smell of lilacs, cherry blossoms and the first white flowers remind me of Riesling. The ephemeral floral aromas and green flavors of tender herbs just exclaim, “spring”. A few years back selling Riesling was an uphill battle. Now, if I don’t have Riesling on the wine list by the glass I hear about it. Customers really know their Rieslings. They ask for variations from New Zealand, Australia, Austria, Oregon and of course Germany. Whenever I’m at a gathering of winegeeks, if they aren’t drinking rosé, it’s Riesling. No grape varietal in the world has so many variations. It can be bone dry or sweet as honey or anything in between. This month’s offering is a selection of Rieslings from all over the world for your springtime enjoyment. Just add some fresh fish, a beautiful Ohio day, plenty of asparagus and morels and you have the best of what springtime in has to offer.
