Mama Boot Camp

School is almost out and it will be time for another summer of "Mama Boot Camp." I enroll my kids every year and spend a good deal of time helping them learn to survive without their mama. That’s my job right? I’m supposed to raise them so they can live on their own, earn and manage their own money and face their own challenges with confidence and determination. Right? This year I’m focusing on money and the consequences of mismanaging your money. My camp involves learning to take a deep breath when you see something you can’t live without (or at least think you can’t live without). Wait a few days or even weeks and then re-evaluate. Is it really worth your hard-earned cash? This is a hard process for a 12 and 10 year old I realize, but it’s one when mastered, will serve them well during their adult lives.

We just returned from New York, celebrating Kim’s 50th birthday, albeit a little late. Wow, did we have some delicious food! The main reason we went was to attend a cooking class with Gabrielle Hamilton the owner/chef at Prune. Gabrielle is one irreverent character. Her cooking style reflects her passion for rustic French food, or as she said food she likes to eat. When we were waiting in line for our class we realized Gabrielle’s father was behind us. People were talking to him and someone asked, "Are you surprised at your daughter’s popularity?" He thought a moment and said, "What’s really surprising is Gabrielle’s customers will pay $14.00 for marrow bones when they’re .60/pound." What’s surprising to me is seeing marrow bones or monkfish liver or head on shrimp with anchovy butter on any menu in the states. All I can say is if you get to NYC don’t miss an opportunity to eat at Prune.
